LLC Fishing company "Polar Sea+"

About company

Fish company “Polar Sea+” is a part of Norebo Group, and one of the largest onshore fish-processing enterprises of the fish industry of the Murmansk oblast.

  • Location: Minkino village, Kola district, Murmansk oblast.
  • Products: frozen and chilled fish, including portions, chilled and individually frozen fillet, minced fish.
  • Stock: chilled fish.
  • Production capacity: 1,600–2,000 t of fish stock per month (two plants).
  • Equipment: a berthing line with an overhead traveling crane for medium-range vessels; a 1000 t cold store; fish-processing equipment, including vertical and horizontal plate freezers, tunnel freezers.

At Phase 1 of the Project “Phase-out of Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases and Ozone-Depleting Substances at Fish and Seafood Processing Enterprises of the Murmansk Oblast (Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation)”, LLC Fishing company “Polar Sea+” was selected as a technical assistance recipient under the component Conversion of the selected enterprises to ozone- and climate-safe substances and technologies of Phase 2.

Tasks to be solved

At the company’s production facilities, an ozone-depleting substance (ODS) R-22 (ODP 0.055, GWP 1,810) and fluorinated greenhouse gas (F-gas) R-134а (ODP 0, GWP 1,430) are used.

The two-stage refrigeration system with five screw compressor packages serves the needs of the production consumers (storage of stock, and processing, freezing, and storage of finished products). The refrigerant from the intermediate vessel is pumped to the medium-temperature consumers, and from the circulation receiver to the low-temperature ones.

As of the end of 2019, the refrigeration equipment was charged with 19.8 tons of R-22. The conversion as part of the Project will ensure direct phase-out of 1.089 tons of ozone-depleting potential (ODP) and 36,839 tons of CO2-equivalent, and in 5 years after completion of the Project, indirect phase-out of 0.44 ODP tons and 14,480 tons of CO2-equivalent.

Planned activities

Through the conversion, the existing refrigeration system will be replaced by a cascade direct evaporation system with refrigerant pumps. The high-temperature stage of the new system will use ammonia (R-717), and the low-temperature stage, a natural refrigerant carbon dioxide (R-744).

The conversion is financed by the grant of the Arctic Council Project Support Instrument and co-financed by a technical assistance recipient.

Grant-funded works, supplies, and services:

  • developing design estimates for conversion of the refrigeration equipment to ozone- and climate-safe substances and technologies;
  • purchasing, manufacturing, and supplying primary and extra equipment;
  • installing, commissioning, and performing other works according to the design specifications and estimates;
  • purchasing, installing and commissioning safety equipment, and adopting safety measures;
  • obtaining permits;
  • recovering ODS and F-gases for destruction or recycling;
  • dismantling and disposing of old equipment;
  • improving energy efficiency;
  • training personnel in the environmental legislation and operation of environmentally safe refrigeration equipment in accordance with the Russian legislation.

The contractor will be selected through bidding.

Co-financed works:

  • constructing a cold store with an ammonia refrigeration plant (design, building, equipment);
  • constructing a new process building with an ozone- and climate-safe refrigeration plant (design, building, equipment, back wall, turning circle);
  • purchasing highly environmentally safe vehicles with reduced CO2 emissions (electric carts, handling device);
  • increasing water supply of the site (constructing a new waste-water treatment plant);
  • increasing delivered power at the site;
  • training the personnel in issues of safe handling of natural refrigerants (ammonia and carbon dioxide).
