LLC MurmanStroy
About company
MurmanStroy, a part of Barents company group, is a prominent company of the fishing industry of the Murmansk oblast and the entire North-West of Russia.
- The company operates a certified multi-building cold store with its own pier at the Kola bay.
- It is a member of an investment quotas program for fishing companies and is completing the construction of a fish-processing complex, Arktika, with a daily capacity of 25 tons of finished product (fillet and minced cod, and haddock). The complex is designed to process (freeze) production residue.
MurmanStroy was selected as a technical assistance recipient under the component Conversion of the selected enterprises to ozone- and climate-safe substances and technologies of Phase 2 of the Project “Phase-out of Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases and Ozone-Depleting Substances at Fish and Seafood Processing Enterprises of the Murmansk Oblast (Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation).”
Tasks to be solved
A single-stage refrigeration system is used to service the needs of the cold store, consisting of:
- a single-frame packaged compressor of four screw compressors,
- an air condenser,
- a circulation receiver,
- a refrigerant pump,
- air-coolers.
The system is charged with R-22, an ozone-depleting substance (ODS) (ODP 0.05, GWP 1810).
As of the beginning of 2020 and 2021, the refrigerant charge was 3 tons, and 0.41 tons were used to re-charge the system due to leakages.
Conversion through the Project will ensure direct phase-out of 0.165 tons of ozone-depleting potential (ODP) and 5,430 tons of CO2-equivalent, and within 5 years after conversion ensure indirect phase-out of 0.113 ODP tons and 3,715 tons of CO2-equivalent.
Planned activities
Through the conversion, the existing refrigeration system will be replaced by a cascade secondary refrigeration system consisting of two cooling circuits connected in series. A high-temperature circuit is charged with a natural refrigerant R-717 (ammonia) that cools a low-temperature circuit with a secondary refrigerant R-744 (carbon dioxide) pumped to consumers.
The conversion is financed by the grant of the Arctic Council Project Support Instrument and co-financed by a technical assistance recipient.
Grant-funded works, supplies, and services:
- developing design estimates for conversion of the refrigeration equipment to ozone- and climate-safe substances and technologies;
- purchasing, manufacturing, and supplying primary and extra equipment;
- installing, commissioning, and performing other works according to the design specifications and estimates;
- purchasing, installing and commissioning safety equipment, and adopting safety measures;
- obtaining permits;
- recovering ODS and F-gases for destruction or recycling;
- dismantling and disposing of old equipment;
- improving energy efficiency;
- training personnel in the environmental legislation and operation of environmentally safe refrigeration equipment in accordance with the Russian legislation.
The contractor will be selected through bidding.
Co-financed works:
- equipping a new production complex with a CO2 (R-744) refrigeration system;
- overhauling a building and heat insulation constructions of the cold store to be converted;
- installing power lines and constructing electric substations to connect a complex and a cold store to the urban electric network;
- financial losses due to suspension of production.
