UNIDO will hold a workshop on conversion of air conditioners to propane (R290)
July 31, 2012
On September 3–7, 2012, UNIDO will hold free workshops on conversion of air-conditioning systems to hydrocarbons, particularly, propane, at the Microclimate, Energy Efficiency and Building Automation Center.
It is no secret that air conditioning and refrigerating systems using R22 will be phased out within the scope fulfillment of Russia’s obligations under the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer.
Hydrocarbons are one of environmentally safe alternatives to ozone depleting substances and greenhouse gases; the use of the latter will be also limited in the longer term.
Why will the workshop be of practical importance?
- Many manufacturers offer new equipment using propane as refrigerant.
- Today, more than 8 million of domestic appliances and up to 40 % of industrial systems are using this popular but ozone-depleting refrigerant, R-22. It is natural that no one is planning to prohibit the use of existing equipment, although certain reporting and servicing requirements will be set. There is, however, high probability of difficulties in servicing of existing equipment in case of refrigerant leakages.
Skeptics should not be afraid of a small amount of hydrocarbons in air-conditioning systems. Almost all modern refrigerators use iso-butane and a significant share of air conditioners offered by many global manufacturers uses hydrocarbons. It is also undeniable that to work with these substances, a technician needs certain skills and installation culture.
UNIDO’s workshop will be dedicated exactly to these issues.
It is free, but only 20 specialists can participate. Preference will be given to lecturers of specialized educational institutions and industry professionals.
