Mayekawa Installs First FUGU Ammonia Chillers in Germany, France & Spain

Japanese OEM Mayekawa has installed the first FUGU water-cooled ammonia/NH3 (R717) chillers in France, Germany and Spain, according to a company post on LinkedIn.

The mCHILLER FUGU is a new water-cooled ammonia chiller designed for industrial applications like breweries, process cooling, building facilities and data centers. It has a “strong industrial design, a long lifespan – and can be used in a wide variety of applications,” Mayekawa said.

Some of the benefits of the FUGU are safety, reliable performance, low operational costs and easy installation, according to Mayekawa’s website.

The FUGU is part of the mCHILLER series, which are plug-and-play solutions with a design focused on energy efficiency and the “perfect balance between durability and simplicity.” The mCHILLER series has a low ammonia charge, with the FUGU 1280R model using 80kg (176.4lbs) of ammonia. On this charge it has a cooling capacity of 1,238kW (352TR) and can achieve a COP of 6.39.

The mCHILLER series from Mayekawa also includes the TAKA, an air-cooled ammonia chiller that will be released at the 2022 Chillventa exhibition in October.

The FUGU chillers was exhibited for the first time in the U.S. during the 2022 AHR Expo in January, generating a large amount of interest from engineers, according to Troy Davis, Energy Group Manager for Mayekawa USA.

In addition to process cooling and data centers, the FUGU ammonia chiller also drew interest from building mechanical engineers in using ammonia chillers for comfort-cooling applications, Davis said.
