Events dedicated to ODS and F-gas phase-out held in Murmansk

On February 2 and 3, 2022, Murmansk saw educational and training events organized by the International Center for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) and Murmansk State Technical University (MSTU) under the Arctic Council Project on phase-out of fluorinated greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances in the fishing industry of the Murmansk oblast.

Due to the enhancement of anti-epidemic measures in view of the severe epidemic situation in the region, the hybrid approach to the events was selected, virtual and face-to-face.

On February 2, specialists of servicing companies of the Murmansk oblast engaged in installation and maintenance of refrigeration systems could participate in a training session. Experts of ICSTI and representatives of Bitzer CIS and GEA HRT introduced them to special aspects of the use of alternative refrigerants: ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, others.

The training was attended by specialists of Murmansk servicing companies, Refmaster, BarentsCool, Ref-Technologies, Klimat i Komfort, SPS-Kholod, IP Smirnov, and representatives of refrigeration equipment owners, Polar Sea+, MurmanStroy, RPK Golfstream.

On February 3, the conference “Legal restrictions and technology transfer of the Murmansk oblast fishing industry to effective and environmentally sound refrigerants” was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Fishery of the Murmansk oblast, heads and specialists of maintenance departments of fishing enterprises and other organizations of the region that operate refrigeration equipment, specialists in installation and maintenance of refrigeration equipment.

Alexandra Amirova, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Fishery of the Murmansk oblast, welcomed the participants with a speech about the development of the regional fishing industry.

The welcoming message of Yury Dubrovin, Chairman of the Board of the Russian Union of the Refrigeration Industry Enterprises, honorary mechanic engineer, member of the International Academy of Refrigeration, was delivered to the participants. In his speech, Mr. Dubrovin called them to stop using such refrigerants as R-134a, R-404A, R-507A, and, certainly, ozone-depleting R-22 in new refrigeration equipment that will be used many years ahead.

Artem Kushnev, Arctic Council Project manager, reviewed the legal restrictions on the use of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) and fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) in the Russian Federation.

Ivan Baranovsky, an ICSTI expert, spoke about the use of ODSs and F-gases in the fishing industry of the Murmansk oblast.

Alexander Lyubeshkin, Arctic Council Project technical manager, presented programs for the conversion and creation of new refrigeration equipment based on natural refrigerants in the Murmansk oblast.

Mikhail Belousov, business development manager at GEA HRT, Dmitry Batenkin, commercial director at Ingenium, Aleksey Ustinov, head of Industrial Refrigeration at Danfoss, Aleksander Kolosvetov, head of the Industrial Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning at Bitzer CIS addressed technological, economic, and other aspects of the use of natural refrigerants in refrigeration equipment.

A report by MSTU was dedicated to the development of its roadmap and educational activities for 2022.

The closing speech was delivered by Dmitry Polukarov, director at Ref-Technologies, who addressed the economic rationale and efficiency of CO2 refrigeration plants by an example of a system with a geothermal heat pump installed at an enterprise in Rovaniemi, Finland.
