Authors’ reading dedicated to the 25<sup>th</sup> anniversary of the Montreal Protocol and the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in Saint Petersburg

On September 17, 2012, authors’ reading dedicated to the 25th annivesary of the Montreal Protocol and the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer took place in the assembly hall of the Institute of Refrigeration and Biotechnologies of the Saint-Petersburg National Research University of Information, Mechanics and Optics. Among the participants were: scientists, university’s lecturers, students, candidates for a master’s degree and postgraduates, and representatives of business community.

The reading was opened by professor A. V. Baranenko, director of the Institute of Refrigeration and Biotechnologies, who emphasized the significance of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. This document was signed 25 years ago and evoked profound changes in approaches to working media for low-temperature equipment.

Professor V. N. Tselikov, UNIDO national expert, made a report on the history and role of the Montreal Protocol. He detailed activities of the UNIDO Centre for International Industrial Cooperation in the Russian Federation, multilateral agreements on hydrofluorocarbons phase out and prospects of replacing HCFCs with natural refrigerants. In conclusion, V. N. Tselikov called the participants not to ease off the efforts on preservation of the ozone layer in their professional activities and thanked the organizers for initiative on holding the conference.

Yu. A. Glotov, a student of the Institute of Refrigeration and Biotechnologies, spoke on the mechanism of the ozone layer destruction.

E. I. Kiprushkina, academic secretary of the Institute of Refrigeration and Biotechnologies, read the address of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon dedicated to the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer and the congratulation of S. R. Levi, deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.

The topic of the Montreal Protocol continued in speeches of V. S. Kalyunov, director of OOO OK, D. F. Kornivets, representative of Bitzer, and A. A. Malyshev, head of refrigerating machines and low-potential energy chair of the Institute of Refrigeration and Biotechnologies.

The reading was closed with a concert of the Students‘ club of the Institute of Refrigeration and Biotechnologies.
